wp.me/p29JER-9bBurgess GAA Notes 3rd March 2013Senior LeagueOur senior hurlers began their County League campaign with a loss against Moycarkey Borris in Kilcolman on Sunday last with a score line of 2:20 to 0:19. Although the result was disappointing, an entertaining game of high scoring hurling was served up. The team that lined out was Niall McGrath, Paddy Hogan, Conor Quigley, John O’Dwyer, Johnny Mulqueen, Damien O’Brien, Brian Tucker, John O’Brien, Jack Flaherty, Stephen Murray, Shane Maher, Danny Ryan, Noel Gleeson, Eoin Hogan and Garry Howard. We did well to recover from an early Moycarkey goal and went in 0:11 to 1:06 up at half time. However the second half saw Moycarkey give a great display of long distance point taking to edge them in front. With the wind against us we were always going to find it tough to stay with Moycarkey and the second goal was to be the real difference on the day. Hard luck to our lads. North Tipp Hogan CupOn Sunday next 10-03-2013 our senior hurlers face Moneygall in the quarter final of this competition at 11:30 in Kilcolman. Please come and support our hurlers! Burgess GAA Notes 10th March 2013
Senior LeagueOur senior hurlers continue their County League campaign with a home fixture against Cashel in Kilcoleman at 12pm Sunday 17th of March. Please come out and support the team. North Tipp Hogan Cup On Sunday last our senior hurlers bowed out of the Hogan Cup in the quarter final against Moneygall 1:12 to 0:14. The team that started was Paddy Looby, Declan O’Donoghue, Willie Ryan, Peter Gill, Damien O’Brien, Noel Gleeson(0:1), Eoin (Leahy) Hogan, Timmy Hogan, Eoin (Tossy) Hogan, Stephen Murray(7,6f), Brian Hogan(0:3) and Cian McDonnell. Subs used Danny Ryan(0:3), On a bitterly cold and windy morning in Kilcolman Burgess faced Moneygall in the senior Hogan Cup quarter final. Though playing against the wind in the first half Burgess held the Lion’s share of possession this however was not translated onto the scoreboard. The half time score of Burgess 0:06 Moneygall 1:07 didn’t tell the full story of the half, Though Burgess went in four points down at half time they did so with eight wide’s against Moneygall’s three. This would prove critical at the final whistle. There were also two 21 metre free’s for Burgess the first, hardly seen by the defenders, rocketed off the crossbar for a point the second found a Moneygall stick to send it over the bar. On the other side of the coin the Moneygall goal when it came was off a defensive error and against the run of play. This is not taking away from the quality of the finish which was exceptional. The second half saw the weather deteriorate into an icy deluge but Burgess started brightly Five unanswered points saw Burgess into the lead at the fifteen minute mark. This was achieved with the help of marvellous double save from a penalty by paddy Looby between the sticks for Burgess. Though the game was tied with 31 minutes gone Moneygall snatched victory with a sublime line ball point at the death, their second of the game, into the teeth of the East wind. All told a game that Burgess could have and perhaps should have won.
Selectors The following were appointed as selectors to the Junior A hurling team: John Murray, Liam Hogan, Dinny Ryan, and Niall Quigley At the same meeting the following were confirmed as selectors for the minor hurling team : Jonathan Ryan, Tony Scroope and Martin Dunne Junior C: Mike O’Dwyer Membership Once again we would like to remind all members and players that haven’t already paid this year’s membership to please do so as soon as possible. The second half followed the template of the first with Burgess completely on top and Cashel only managing a meagre 4 points to Burgess’s 4 goals and 6 points. Substitute Cian McDonnell made an immediate impression after his introduction bagging a fine brace of goals scored within a minute of each other. Burgess had a good away win over Golden Kilfeacle with a final score of 2:18 to 2:13 on a bitterly cold afternoon in Golden. Burgess started brightly with a good point from play inside a minute by Stephen Murray. This good start only got better when a minute later Kevin Nealon goaled after a great solo run. Burgess were good value for their half time lead of 2:06 to 0:07 with their second goal coming from a blistering Stephen Murray 21mtr free. The only downside for the half was the concession of too many frees with five of Golden’s seven first half score coming from frees. The second half saw Burgess in control for the most part and building on their lead. With 26 minutes gone in the second half Burgess were cruising and leading comfortably 2:18 to 0:13 when Golden struck for two late goals in the 27th and 28th minute (penalty). When the fulltime whistle blew Burgess had held on for a 2:18 to 2:13 victory Membership

Next week’s draw, April 15th, will be in Barry’s. Thank you for your continued support. Match report
Our North senior campaign got off to a disappointing start on Sunday with a heavy defeat to Silvermines in McDonagh park. We took the wind advantage in the first half though it was the Silvermines who scored first after only one minute of play from a free by Jason Forde. Stephen Murray levelled things up with a free of his own a minute later. Forde then tagged on another from play which was quickly cancelled out by an Eoin Leahy Hogan effort, also from play. At two points a piece with seven minutes on the clock this would be as close as we would get to the mines. There then followed a sequence of five unanswered points from the mines which left them 0:07 to 0:02 ahead with 20 minutes gone. The rot was reversed momentarily with another Murray pointed free however the mines struck back with points from play within a minute. We were now 0:09 to 0:03 adrift after 21 minutes. We rallied before half time scoring four good points from play to the Silvermines one, two from John O’Dwyer and one a piece from Eoin Leahy Hogan and Donagh Maher. The sides went in at half time with Burgess trailing by 0:07 to 0:10 and hill to climb in the second half. 2nd half If we had a hill to climb at the end of the first it would soon turn into a mountain. With seven minutes elapsed in the second half the mines had scored 2:02 to Burgess’s 0:02. The goals that effectively finished the game as a contest came from frees within three minutes of each other off the stick of Jason Forde. Burgess fought gamely on and at one stage got briefly within five points of the mines but there was another hammer blow in store after 15 minutes of the half when David Boland snuck in for the Mines third goal of the day. The game finished up with the Silvermines deserving winners on a scoreline of 3:18 to 0:15. Burgess Niall McGrath, Paddy Hogan, Donagh Maher(0,1), John Hogan, Conor Quigley, Johnny Mulqueen, Peter Gill, Noel Gleeson, john O’Dwyer(0,2), Damien O’Brien(0,1), Shane Maher, Eoin tossy Hogan, Stephen Murray(0,8 7f), Brian Hogan & Eoin leahy Hogan(0,2). Subs used Cian McDonnell, Daniel Ryan(0,1), Kevin Nealon & Jack Flaherty Silvermines scorers Jason Forde 2,08 (2,05f) William Keogh 0,4 David Keogh 0,03 Sean Quirke 0,02 Orrie Quirke 0,01 David Boland 1,00

Burgess GAA notes 15th April 2013U12 football round 2 Burgess v Ballinahinch in Kilcoleman Burgess 2-3 Ballinahinch 1-2 Burgess played Ballinahinch in their second match in Kilcoleman this evening. Burgess settled early and were 1-2 up after 10 minutes. Ballinahinch replied with a well taken point. The Burgess boys responded well and got their second goal just before half time. Ballinahinch came out fighting in the second half and ten minutes in they had narrowed the gap to just a goal. Burgess fought well and with hard work and a never say die attitude they weathered the storm. A well taken free by Cathal Conneally secured the match. Thank’s to all for your continued support. Senior match report Another Burgess attack launched After last week’s stinging defeat to the Slivermines our senior hurlers responded in fine style with a great victory over Roscrea in Dolla on Saturday last. Conditions were poor with a strong cross field wind making shooting extremely difficult for both sides but nevertheless Burgess got off to a bright start with Stephen Murray making the score 0:02 to 0:00 after 8 minutes. Roscrea replied with two points of their own to make the game level at two points apiece after 15 minutes. Burgess then took over outscoring Roscrea by 1:05 to 0:02 for the remainder of the half. The Burgess scores came from Murray (1:03) and a point each from Noel Gleeson and Damien O’Brien. This left Burgess leading 1:07 to 0:04 at half time. The second half began like the first with Burgess registering the opening score, a fine effort from play by Damien O’Brien after only minute on the clock. Burgess continued to dominate the half outscoring Roscrea 0:06 to 0:04 for the half in deteriorating weather conditions. The Burgess scorers for the half were Damien O’Brien with 0,2 Stephen Murray also with 0,2, Eoin Leahy Hogan and Daniel Ryan with a point each. The final score Burgess were full value for their 1:13 to 0:08 win on what was a difficult day for hurling (Burgess had 16 wides, Roscrea had 8) This result now sets up a grandstand make or break final group game against Toomevara. So we march on with our fate firmly in our own hands. Group table as it stands

Burgess GAA notes 28th April 2013
Senior Hurling
Our senior hurlers bowed out of the North championship with a 2:17 to 0:10 defeat to Toomevara. This very disappointing end to our North campaign puts our senior hurlers into the county championship and probably a long wait before we see them in action again. We did well to stay within 3 points of Toome against a strong breeze in the first half. Though the half time score of Toome 0:08 to our 0:05 only told part of the story. Toome had 14 wides in the half and had brought some outstanding saves from Niall Mcgrath. The second half saw us chipping away at the Toome lead without ever drawing ahead. At the 18th minute we drew level and that would be the end of our scoring for the day. With 25minutes of the second half elapsed Toome were 3 points up and we were still in the hunt but they hit us for two goals inside two minutes and the game and our North campaign were over. The final score of 2:17 to 0:10 didn’t do our efforts on the day justice and leaves us with plenty to work on for the county championship.
The team that lined out was as follows
Niall McGrath, Jack Flaherty, Shane Maher, John O’Dwyer, Conor Quigley, Donagh Maher, Johny Mullqueen, Eoin Tossy Hogan, Noel Gleeson, Eoin Leahy Hogan, Damien O’Brien, Danny Ryan, Stephen Murray, Brian Hogan, Cian McDonnell. Subs used Timmy Hogan, Peter Gill & Kevin Nealon. The club wishes Conor Quigley a speedy recovery from the injury he sustained during the game.
Junior C League
Our junior C hurlers had a fine win over Silvermines in Kilcolman on Sunday last. We lead from start to finish in what was a thoroughly enjoyable game of hurling. We eventually finished convincing winners on a score line of 2:12 to 1:10. The team and subs that lined out were as follows. Brian Sherlock, Mike Hogan, Kevin McDonnell, Robbie Mullqueen, Sean Flynn, Brian Tucker, Dan Nevin, Tony Hogan, Bill Flaherty, Kieran Ryan, Robbie Cremin, Shane McCarthy, Andy Dunne, Fergal McDonnell & Colm O’Brien. Subs used; James Coady, Liam O’Donohue, Paidi Gill, Franky Hogan & Padraig McDonnell.

Burgess GAA Notes 6th May 2013
U12 North Football Final
Burgess 2-05 Portroe 1-03 Saturday 4th MayBurgess won the toss and elected to play against the strong breeze in the first half. Both teams were evenly matched in the first ten minutes with Portroe registering the first point. A well taken goal by Micheal Ryan after 12 minutes put Burgess in the lead. Portroe applied a lot of pressure for the remainder of the half and scored another point leaving the score Burgess 1-00 Portroe 0-02 at half time. In the second half Portroe got the first score to level the game. Burgess with a few switches started to take control of the game Jack O Keefe scored a well taken point from play and another from a free to leave Burgess two points ahead ten minutes in the second half. Caoilfhionn Maher scored a great goal followed by a point each by Cathal Conneally and Jack O’Keefe. On the break Portroe scored a goal. Burgess then finished strongly with a well taken point by Sean Dunne. Congratulations to the players and management who have done the parish proud. It took great heart, determination and belief to win today and these lads have it in abundance. It was great to see such great support from the parish on the day. We also remind parents that a DVD is available of the game. Please contact the management for further details. Junior A League
Our junior A hurlers had a hard fought 3-09 to 1-09 away win over Lorrha on Saturday last. Though we hurled with wind advantage in the first half we went in with only a one point lead at half time, 1-05 to 1-04. Our job became tougher just after the restart when we were reduced to 14 men but to our lads credit they rose their game and ran out deserving winners in the end on a score line of 3-09 to 1-09. Our performance in the second half was notable for some quality point taking against the wind in darkening and greasy conditions. Well done to the players and management. Brian Sherlock, Declan O’Donohue, Sean Flynn, Willie Ryan, Tony Hogan, Timmy Hogan, Brian Tucker, Jack Flaherty, Johnny Ryan, Kieran Ryan, Paddy Hogan, Bill Flaherty, Fergal McDonnell, John O’Brien and Garret Howard. Burgess GAA Notes 12th May 2013
County Semi Final U12 Burgess v Aherlow Sunday 12th May 2013 in Holycross
Burgess went into the game as the last North team standing in the County semi finals. Burgess won the toss and elected to play against the strong breeze in the first half. Aherlow got the first score of the game with a well taken point after five minutes. Burgess were defending well and on a break Cathal Conneally delivered a long ball into the Aherlow square. The Aherlow full back and gaol keeper misjudged the ball and it ended up in the back of the net. Aherlow full forward was one on one with the Burgess goal keeper Kiefer O’Brien who made an unbelievable save. Aherlow applied a lot of pressure and scored three more points during the first half to leave the score Aherlow 4pts Burgess 1-00 at half time. Burgess got a dream start in the second half when Tom Gibson scored a goal after one minute. This was followed soon after by a well taken point by Cathal Conneally. Burgess dominated the next ten minutes of the second half with Cathal Conneally on fire scoring an excellent goal form a 45. Burgess continued to dominate for the remainder of the second half with Sean Dunne and Cathal Conneally adding a point each. In the final moments of the game Sean Dunne scored an excellent point to leave the final score Burgess 3 -05. Aherlow 0 – 04 Great credit is due to all these U12 players, they have never been found wanting and have always done what the coaches have asked of them. It was great to see such support from the Parish and continued support is needed for County final next Saturday, time and venue to follow.
Junior A LeagueMoneygall players enjoying the amenities at half time Our junior A’s recorded a fine win over Moneygall on Saturday last. Though we hurled with aid of a strong breeze it was Moneygall who began the brighter racing into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after 5 minutes. We reeled in and overhauled Moneygall lead and by the half time whistle we were 0-10 to 0-04 ahead. The second half saw us out score Moneygall 1-7 to 0-3 and run out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-7. Well done to the players and management. Burgess GAA Notes 19th May 2013County Final U12 Football Burgess v Ballyporeen Sunday 19th May 2013 in Drombane
Our u12’s were pipped at the post after a heroic comeback in the second half of their county football final thriller against Ballyporeen on Sunday last. Great credit is due to our young footballers for the way they fought back to get within a point of a strong Ballyporeen outfit. We were 1-1 to no score down at half time but came out battling in the second. We were within a point with 3 minutes remaining but alas it was Bally who were to get the final score to seal the match at 1-3 to 1-5. We thank the players and mentors for their efforts and commitment this year. They have brought great honour to the parish. Junior A LeagueOur junior A’s defeated Kilruane comfortably in the North Junior A hurling league on Saturday last. We had the better of the first half, leading 10 points to 3 at half-time. Any chance of a Kilruane comeback in the second half was soon dashed when Kevin Nealon goaled a mere 15 seconds after the restart. A fine display of point taking in greasy conditions thereafter saw our boys run out convincing winners on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-7. A score which coincidentally is the exact same winning margin as the previous week’s victory over Moneygall. Well done to the players and management. Brian Sherlock, Kevin McDonnell, Sean Flynn, Willie Ryan, Tony Hogan, Timmy Hogan, Brian Tucker, Jack Flaherty, Johnny Ryan, Paddy Hogan, Bill Flaherty, John O’Brien, Garret Howard, Kevin Nealon and Fergal McDonnell. Senior Hurling Challenge Cup Semi Final DR. FOGARTY CUP SEMI FINAL Burgess 2-17 Clonoulty Rossmore 1-11
Our senior hurlers had good win over Clonoulty-Rossmore in the semi-final of the Dr. Fogarty Cup on Thursday evening last. We were fastest out of the blocks on the night racing into a 0-7 to 0-0 lead after 9minutes of play with points from Damien O’Brien, Eoin Hogan, Daniel Ryan, Noel Gleeson and Cian McDonnell. In fact took Clonoulty 10 minutes to register their opening score of the game, a pointed free by Fiachra O’Keeffe. More good work by our forwards and a fine goal from Eoin Hogan left us well in control and 1-9 to 0-2 up after 15minutes of play. Clonoulty then sparked into life an mounted something of a comeback leaving the score at half time Burgess 1-11, Clonoulty 1-7. The Clonoulty goal coming off the stick of full forward John Heffernan. This left everything to play for in the second half, where despite our dominance we found ourselves only four points ahead. The second half began brightly after Eoin Hogan goaled form a penalty after the Clonoulty goalkeeper was judged to have dragged down Andy Dunne as he bore down on Goal. This left us leading 2-11 to 1-7 after only 2 minutes of the second half. A great defensive performance for the remainder of the game saw Clonoulty held to a miserly four points for the half while further points from Eoin Hogan, Damien O’Brien and Noel Gleeson saw us to a final score of 2-17 to 1-11. Burgess: Brian Sherlock, Patrick Hogan, Shane Maher, William Ryan, John O’Dwyer, Tim Hogan, Jack Flaherty, Noel Gleeson (0-2), Johnny Ryan, Cian McDonnell (0-1), Damien O’Brien (0-4), Brian Hogan, Dan Ryan (0-1), Eoin Hogan (2-9), Andrew Dunne. Subs used; Michael Flaherty, Stephen Murray, Brian Tucker. Clonoulty Rossmore: Jimmy Maher, Joey O’Keeffe, Andrew Quirke, Kevin Horan, James Horan, Anthony Kearney, James Ryan (W), Tom Butler, Paddy Ryan, Aidan White (0-1), Paul Hayes (0-2), Seamus Carew, Fiachra O’Keeffe (0-7), John Heffernan (1-0), Tommy Lyng (0-1). Please come out and give our lads your support! Junior A North hurling league
The final group game of our junior A hurling league began ominously in Borrisoleigh on Saturday night last with Borris charging to a 1-2 to 0-1 lead after 5 minutes. We mounted a comeback thereafter and by the 15th minute were only a point adrift, 1-3 to 0-5. Our scores coming from Kieran Ryan, Brian Tucker and Garrett Howard. This was, unfortunately, as close as we would get to Borris for the remainder of the match. Fergal McDonnell added one more point to our tally just before half time leaving the score at the break 2-11 to 0-6. The second half began as the first with Borrisoleigh to the fore. By the time we registered our first score of the half, a goal by Paddy Hogan, the score was Borris 3-14 Burgess 1-6. Credit is due to our lads who kept plugging away and never let their heads drop but in the end Borrisoleigh were just too strong and ran out easy winners with a final score of Burgess 2-11 Borrisoleigh 4-17. Burgess Team: Brian Sherlock, Paudie McDonnell, Sean Flynn, Declan O’Donoghue, Willie Ryan, Brian Tucker (0-2), Tommy Walsh, Kieran Ryan (0-1), Johnny Ryan (0-1), Tadgh O’Halloran (0-1), Paddy Hogan (1-0), Andy Dunne (1-0), Garrett Howard (0-3), Liam O’Donoghue, Fergal McDonnell (0-1). Subs used Colm O’Brien (0-1) and Dan Nevin (0-1) Despite the loss we still qualify for the semi-finals of this competition where we will meet Nenagh Eire Og on Saturday 8th of June at 7pm in Cloughjordan.

Burgess GAA notes 9th June 2013Junior A Hurling league Semi-final
We bowed out to Eire Og Nenagh in the semi-final of the Junior A North hurling league, Burgess 1-15 Nenagh 1-19 It was a good game of hurling in sweltering heat in Cloughjordan. We made the better start leading 1-6 to 0-2 after 7 minutes and seemed to be hurling well. Fair dues to Nenagh they came back at us and the scores were tied 1-9 each at half time. Both goals were fairly fortunate efforts, ours from a long range free and Eire Og’s coming from a point bound ball that bounced back off the upright. The second half was tit for tat for the most part with the sides level with 3 minutes remaining. Nenagh got 4 quick scores to seal the victory. We were left rueing a couple of missed goal chances that could have changed the outcome. Best of luck to Nenagh in the final they are a well drilled outfit who’ll be difficult to beat. Senior HurlingOur senior hurlers had a busy week with a county championship rd 2 game v Cappawhite on Monday evening and then the Dr. Fogarty cup league final on Sunday night. Burgess v Cappawhite Rd2 county senior hurling championship 2013 Burgess 0-22 Cappawhite 1-11
The outcome of this round 2 county championship game dictated whether Burgess played in senior A or B next year and as such made it make or break for both sides. We started the brighter, albeit the more wasteful, despite having the aid of the breeze. After ten minutes we had edged in front, two points to one, our scores coming from both Eoin Hogans from play, however our wide count was seven to two. We seemed a little nervous in front of goal despite our dominance in terms of ball possession and field position . Cappawhite had the only goal of the game after 13 minutes of play and it was a rasper which gave Niall McGrath no chance. The score stood at 1-2 to 0-3 at this point and despite our dominance we trailed by 2 points. Well done to our lads though as they regrouped, recovered and lead for a time again before going in level at half time on this sweltering evening in Newport 1-7 to 0-10. The second half had more bite to it and we began well with two excellent points from play from Danny Ryan and Damien O’Brien putting us 0-12 to 1-7 up after two minutes of the half, 0-12 to 1-7. We dominated the remainder of the half with a display of accurate point taking from play and placed ball in what was becoming a fiery second half. Indeed our free taker on the night helped himself to seven pointed frees in the second half. In the end we held Cappa to only four scores in the second half against our twelve which resulted in our boys running out deserving winners 0-22 to 1.11. We now meet Borrisoleigh in the next round of the county championship Burgess scorers: Eoin Leahy Hogan 0-13(10f), Eoin (Tossy) Hogan 0-2, Danny Ryan 0-1, Damien O’Brien 0-2, Mike Flaherty 0-1.1 County Senior Hurling Challenge Cup Fr Fogarty Cup Final Nenagh Éire Óg 1-18 Burgess 1-18 AET
We set a blistering pace early on in this senior hurling league final leading 1-10 to 0-4 at half time. Our points coming from the two Eoins Hogans, three a piece, Kevin Nealon, Noel Gleeson, Jonathan Ryan and Conor Quigley. Our goal came from a deft flick by Brian Hogan after the ball was broken down into his path by Kevin Nealon. Though we lead it was with the aid of a stiff breeze and we would be shooting into a low sun in the second half. Eire Og came out with all guns blazing in the second half and had our lead pegged back to just three points 1-13 to 1-10 with 15 minutes left of normal time. Their comeback was completed at the stroke of normal time when they equalised to send the game to extra time at 1-14 each. Extra time was tit for tat with both side exhausted and it was left to Tossy Hogan to tie the game up with a superbly taken pressure shot at the death to leave the scores 1-18 all. Well done to our lads for turning out two fine results within a week. Burgess team and scorers: Niall McGrath, John O’Dwyer, Shane Maher, Jonathan Mulqueen, Jack O’Flaherty, Conor Quigley (0-1), Michael O’Flaherty (0-1), Noel Gleeson (0-1), Damien O’Brien, Eoin ‘Tossy’ Hogan (0-4), Brian Hogan (1-1), Jonathan Ryan (0-1), Eoin Hogan (0-7, 0-5 frees), Kevin Nealon (0-1). Sean Dunne got two great points with Jack O'Keeffe rounding off the first half with another great point. Aaron Sharkey opened our scoring in the second half with a point, Roscrea quickly responded with an excellent goal. This was quickly cancelled out by a goal from Sean Dunne who also got three points in the half. Burgess Gaa notes 1 September 2013 U12 County hurling Final Burgess v Ballyneale
Burgess u12 county champions
Our u12’s got the weekend to great start with a fantastic 2-5 to 3-0 win in the county final on Friday night. Our u12’s have brought get honour to the club this year after doing the double in Football and hurling in the North along with Friday nights county hurling title. Congratulations to all the players and mentors for their efforts and the enjoyment they have provided during the year. We look forward to great things in the future from this talented bunch. U12 Match report
All roads out of Burgess on Friday evening lead to the Durlas Og pitch in Thurles for the meeting of north champions Burgess and the south champions Ballyneale in the 2013 U12 county hurling final. A tight tough encounter was anticipated by all and it lived up to its billing. Burgess played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and were quick out of the blocks when Aaron Sharkey rattled the Ballyneale net for his first goal of the game. Burgess were now on the ascendency, with great teamwork and attitude took the game to Ballyneale. This was also due to a Brendan Cummins like save by Oisin Hynes after 9 minutes. Between the 10 and 15 minute Cathal Conneally struck two great points and Jack O’Keefe one to leave Burgess leading by 1-03 to no score. Burgess were rocked by a Ballyneale goal just before halftime where a hard shot from the wing forward deceived the burgess keeper and end in the net leaving the ht score Burgess 1-03 Ballyneale 1-00. Burgess regrouped at halftime as they knew Ballyneale would put it up to them for the remaining 20 minutes. Another superb point from Cathal Conneally kept the scoreboard ticking over. Again Ballyneale came at Burgess and were rewarded with their second goal 8 minutes into the second half leaving Burgess only 1 point ahead playing into the wind. Like all great teams as soon as they conceded, Burgess with some fine passing found Aaron Sharkey free in front of the Ballyneale and the net shook for a second time and the umpire raised the beautiful green flag for Burgess. Legs on both sides were now tiring and all subs had been used so both sides dug deep looking for the next score. Ballyneale were rewarded when Burgess defence failed to clear a ball and it ended in the Burgess net leaving Burgess now only 1 points up and five minutes left to go. Again Burgess went on the attack and as the ball broke to Sean Dunne whom made space and struck a fine point from his right side. The large contingent from Burgess were now vocal and roared on the team. Ballyneale threw the kitchen sink at Burgess but the defence was now water tight and when the referee Kevin Jordan blew the final whistle there were great scenes of joy and celebration from the Burgess players, mentors and supporters. Burgess had won their first county U12 hurling final as well as adding the north hurling and football titles to their cabinet. Ironically they won the hurling final by the same amount as they lost the football county final earlier this year the only game they lost all year. What an achievement by these young lads and lassies. When the going got tough in the second half these players dug deep and believed in themselves. Like the line in the song “success to burgess hurlers, may their courage never fail” which was true for all to see this evening. Sean Dunne accepted the Cup from the juvenile county chairman on behalf of the team and thanked Ballyneale for a wonderful sporting game. A large procession of cars headed back to Newtown passing through Nenagh blowing horns and waving jerseys. A great night was had in Reidy’s afterwards. Dr. Fogarty Cup senior league final replay Burgess 1-19 Nenagh Eire Og 1-14
The winning run continued on Sunday when our senior hurlers enjoyed a fine win in an entertaining game against Eire Og. This was a fitting way for our senior hurlers to round off the year and we thank players and management for their efforts throughout the year.
