Burgess and Knockshe can't be seperated
Having been treated to two nail-biting encounters from Croke Park earlier in the day, this game could have been somewhat of an anti-climax in comparison but Burgess and Knockshegowna provided excellent value on Sunday evening.
David Downey looked to have secured the win for Knockshegowna midway through the second period of extra time when he finished a good attacking move to the net. Burgess had other ideas however and with the last puck of the game, well into injury time, big Kevin Seymour reached higher than anyone else to snap a long range free and crash home an unstoppable shot to the back of the Knockshegowna net to ensure another day out for his team.
In the end a draw was probably fair and Burgess fought doggedly to the very end but Knockshegowna will be a little disappointed having led by five points with just four minutes of normal time remaining and a numerical advantage following the dismissal of Mick Dunne ten minutes from time.
Burgess can be grateful to Garrett Howard for his almost perfect free taking record and telling contribution from play as well. While Declan Costello provided the same service, Knockshegowna were not as heavily dependent on a single contributor to their tally.
There were many good performances on both sides and Knockshegowna will be anxiously awaiting a medical opinion on Michael Kennedy who unfortunately was stretchered off before the final whistle with a knee injury. This game will help both sides and the replay should draw a much bigger crowd in anticipation of another exciting contest.
It was tit for tat in the opening exchanges with both free takers, Declan Costello for Knockshegowna and Garrett Howard for Burgess on target with two apiece in the first quarter. Knockshe began to get a grip on the game at this stage and Declan Costello (free), Eamon Murphy and Paul Lake all had points to open up a three point gap.
Daniel Ryan scored a beautiful point on the run off his left side in the 20th minute and Howard added another free to reduce the gap to one before John O’Donoghue tapped over a point for Knockshegowna.
With five minutes to go before the break an inviting ball from right half back Michael O’Brien was uncharacteristically fumbled by Paddy Looby in the Burgess goal allowing Michael Kennedy to smash home Knockshegowna’s first goal. Darren Browne added a point and Garrett Howard converted two frees to leave the score at half time 1-7 to 0-6 in favour of Knockshegowna.
Knockshe maintained their advantage in the second half with three points from the restart through a Costello free and one each from Paul Lake and Eamon Murphy. Mick Dunne shot over the bar for Burgess when a goal looked on in the 39th minute and the deadly accurate Howard had a brace from placed balls to keep Burgess in touch.
Following Dunne’s dismissal Knockshe looked comfortable at 1-12 to 0-10 with the clock ticking towards the final whistle but a goal from a top spinning free from Howard through a crowded Knockshe goal-line gave Burgess a glimmer of hope.
The glimmer increased to a chink of light with two minutes to go when Howard popped over a point on the run and when John O’Brien confidently struck the equaliser in the59th minute from the right wing, the Burgess supporters were positively beaming.
With time up Declan Costello dropped back to take a free deep in his own half and probably 110 yards from the target. Aided by the breeze Costello struck a monstrous effort bang on target but Paddy Looby reached high to bat the ball to safety and maintain parity for Burgess as the final whistle blew.
With Burgess restored to fifteen players as Colm O’Brien was re-introduced, the close pattern of the game continued into extra time. Howard struck once again from the throw in and Paul Lake equalised within seconds. Michael Kennedy and Declan Costello extended Knockshe’s lead to two before Howard cancelled those out with two points of his own to level proceedings once more. A Costello free gave Knockshe a one-point lead at the extra time interval.
Amazingly there were just three scores in the final period of the game. Firstly Howard brought his personal tally to 1-13 with an equalising 65 in the 73rd minute. Paddy Looby made a wonderful save from a wellstruck Michael Kennedy effort four minutes later but David Downey was on hand to smash the rebound home to put Knockshegowna in the driving seat before Seymour’s saving score with the final puck of this intriguing encounter.
