Burgess win not enough to progress
Burgess scored five points in a row to come from behind and claim their third victory in this year’s Hibernian North Tipperary championship but it wasn’t enough for them to progress from the group as they miss-out on score difference from Kilruane and Sunday’s opponents Kildangan.
Scores were level eight times but nine minutes from time, Burgess trailed by two points as Kildangan appeared to have enough in reserve. However, Kildangan’s, Paraic Kelly was red carded for a foul on Jonathon Ryan. Stephen Murray pointed the resulting free and with the extra man, Burgess displayed renewed vigour and roared onto victory.
Burgess saw the return of Shane Maher who recovered from a broken jaw. The former Tipp defender, initially lined out at left wing forward before moving to full forward midway through the first half. Using his strength and experience he troubled the Kildangan defence winning many frees which top scorer, Stephen Murray took advantage en route to scoring 0-12.
Tossy Hogan, as usual, worked very hard in providing valuable ball towards the opposition end. Jonathon Ryan gave added help in that department. Donagh Maher shone at centre back with John O’Dwyer, Brian Hogan, John Hogan playing very solid in the corners. Both Johnny Mulqueen and Noel Gleeson never put a foot wrong on the wings.
Kildangan meanwhile had to line out without Hugh Flannery who suffered a shoulder injury in a recent league game. As a result, Jack Loughnane made his championship debut at midfield allowing Padraic Kelly move to right wing back. Kelly was doing well at wing back until his dismissal. Dan Hackett played steadily at centre back and his half back partner Ger Slattery oozed class in front of an uneasy inside backline. Five Kildangan forwards scored in a sextet that failed to get a real grip on the game and take Kildangan a step higher to press home their advantage especially in the second half when they went three points clear with twenty minutes remaining. Eoin Kelly gave Kildangan the lead after twenty seconds while close encounters of the wrong kind saw a yellow card issued to each side in a testy opening few minutes. It took until the seventh minute before Burgess had matters level after Jonathon Ryan’s delivery created space for Stephen Murray to score. Joe Gallagher put Kildangan ahead but Murray leveled with a 65. Darragh Egan pointed a free in the 14th minute after Tadgh Gallagher was fouled. One minute later, Ruairí Gleeson extended his teams lead after Ger Slatttery cleared from his own half.
Stephen Murray replied for Burgess with a fortyfive metre free but Kildangan responded when Tadgh Gallagher’s effort for a point just missed the target with the close marking John O’Dwyer forcing the Kildangan forward away from goal.
Stephen Murray’s 65 brought Burgess level but from the resulting puckout saw Tommy Connors take the initiative by putting Kildangan ahead. Further Kildangan pressure saw Sean Kelly extend the lead after his shot grazed the top of the crossbar. (the ball went wide!) Back came Burgess with Donagh Maher drifting into opposition territory and cut through for a point. Kildangan had meanwhile failed to take their opportunities while at the other end, their goalmouth was under threat when Shane Maher raced in behind the defence and on losing his hurley he kicked wide unaware that there was plenty support available and a chance of a goal had been squandered. Coming close to the half time whistle, Shane Maher began to pose further problems and in added time he won two frees which Stephen Murray converted to give Burgess a 0-7 to 0-6 half time lead. Kildangan began the second half with renewed confidence when Ruairi Gleeson earned a free and Darragh Egan converted. Joe Gallagher added a great point but Stephen Murray created parity with a free after Shane Maher was fouled again.
Darragh Egan restored Kildangan’s lead but Shane Maher had the teams level following a good delivery by Eoin Tossy Hogan. Kildangan’s response was immediate. A three-man move involving Ger Slattery and Tadgh Gallagher led to Tommy Connors (now corner forward ) scoring a point. His score led to a bright period for Kildangan as Darragh Egan added two more points, the first from a free before the wing forward linked up with Joe Gallagher for a fantastic second.
But Burgess responded with two points, the first a Stephen Murray free from sixty eight metre free and the same player added a point from play after Brian Hogan had cleared.
In the 49th minute, Sean Kelly replied with an excellent score to put Kildangan two ahead as his team looked to have the measure of their opponents. However things took a turn in the 51st minute when Paraic Kelly was dismissed on fouling Jonathon Ryan. Murray pointed the resulting free. Burgess, boosted by the extra man, pinned their opponents in their own half. Tony Scroope pointed a free from half way to level. Johnny Mulqueen had moved forward to win a free which Stephen Murray found the target. Damien O’Brien came more into the action and also earned a free which was easy for Murray.
All the play was heading towards the town end. Tossy Hogan skipped up the left wing to score a great point and Burgess were three ahead. Meanwhile Ruairi Gleeson won a free but it was overturned following some dissent. (the cutest foul I've ever seen aboy Timmy!) But his team sustained pressure and deep into added time, they won one more free. Nothing but a goal would do and Darragh Egan’s top spin wriggled through a crowded goalmouth which Niall McGrath was grateful to see and clear. (understatement of the year)
