Draw game 1:13 to 0:16 Nenagh should have won it from what I hear. Here's the Examiner's report upon the game: ALL-IRELAND minor football medallist Seamus Kennedy scored an equalising point in the 10th minute of stoppage time as Thurles CBS salvaged a replay from a gripping Dr Harty Cup quarter-final with Tipp rivals Nenagh CBS at Dolla yesterday. Referee Fergal Horgan added an extra 11 minutes and that gave 2009 champions Thurles the time they needed to snatch a draw in front of a bumper crowd. After the regulation hour, Nenagh were on course to avenge their 2010 semi-final defeat by Thurles as they led 0-16 to 0-11 but the seven-time winners struck late with a 1-2 haul to level proceedings. In the fourth minute of injury time, Kevin Slattery pounced for a close range goal, after Pat Ralph’s viciously-struck 20m free was saved, and, incredibly, late points from Conor Lanigan (free) and Kennedy ensured a replay next week. Nenagh will argue far too much added time was played but it was a stop-start affair in the second-half and a serious injury to Nenagh full-back Niall Gleeson held the game up for four minutes. Thurles also racked up 16 wides, including 10 in the second-half, and suffered from free-taking troubles throughout the game. Clonoulty-Rossmore’s Sean Maher helped himself to three points from play for Thurles but the centre-forward was also guilty of five wides in thesecond-half. Nenagh mentors will hope their players are not scarred psychologically after letting the lead slip in the dying minutes, but they certainly won’t lie down in the replay and have a potential match winner in Jason Forde. On home soil, the Silvermines star scored 0-9, including five frees and a sideline cut. Forde was to the fore in the opening half as Nenagh, who conceded the opening two scores, hit a purple patch of eight points without reply toestablish a commanding 0-8 to 0-2 lead. Conor Lanigan’s 23rd minute point ended a 17-minute barren spell for Thurles and, by half-time, they were in touch, trailing by 0-7 to 0-9. Midway through the second period, the sides were level at 0-11 apiece before Nenagh stepped on the gas again and cruised into a 0-16 to 0-11 lead with a run of five unanswered scores. With Thurles profligate in front of goal, Nenagh looked on course for a sweet victory but there was still time left, plenty for it, for Thurles to mount a remarkable comeback. Scorers for Thurles CBS: K Slattery 1-1, Sean Maher (Clonoulty-Rossmore) 0-3, P Ralph 0-3 (2f), C Lanigan 0-3 (2f), C Hammersley 0-2, S Kennedy 0-1. Scorers for Nenagh CBS: J Forde 0-9 (5f, 1 sl), P Fogarty 0-2, J Loughnane, T Gallagher, S O’Brien, P Shanahan & J Mackey, 0-1 each. "Nenagh CBS will play Thurles CBS in the replay of the Dr. Harty Cup Quarter-Final on Wednesday January 25th at 1:30pm in The Ragg." Source: Twitter @ #gaa I took in this game on an extended lunch-break today - in borderline unplayable conditions, Nenagh showed tremendous self-belief and determination to grind out a 1-7 to 0-8 win over a highly fancied Thurles CBS side. At full back, Jack Fla didn't put a foot wrong, letting all and sundry know exactly who was boss in and around the square. My match programme unfortunately didn't make it out of The Ragg in one piece so I'm unsure of who else from the club is on the panel, though I do know that Niall Quigley is involved in a selectorial capacity. Anyway, the very best of luck to all of the Brothers' camp in their upcoming semi-final and here's hoping they can put the unenviable "Great Underachievers of Harty Cup Hurling" tag to bed in the coming weeks.

Forde finds range to inspire Nenaghexaminer.ieNenagh CBS 1-7 Thurles CBS 0-8By Diarmuid O'Flynn In the drawn game of this Harty Cup quarter-final a week ago Seamus Kennedy, one of the stars of Tipperary's march to All-Ireland minor football honours, was the hero of the hour for Thurles CBS, his late-late injury-time point sending the game to a replay. Yesterday it was the turn of another Tipperary minor star, but this time from a different code and with a different school. Jason Forde, last year's Tipperary minor hurling captain, notched 1-5 of Nenagh's 1-7, thus inspiring his side to do what they failed to do last week, and close out the deal. Conditions at The Ragg were terrible, no fault of the local club who had the pitch in as good a condition as you'll find anywhere at this time of year. No, this was down to the rain, which fell incessantly. That such a massive crowd still turned up (the stand was packed, hundreds more following proceedings from their cars on sloping banks of the uncovered side) was testimony not just to the enduring interest in hurling in Tipperary, but to the talent in these two schools, to the fare they served up in the drawn game. They did it again here, defying the conditions to produce another enthralling encounter. With players struggling to hold their feet, struggling also to hold onto their hurleys, the ball like a bar of soap, this was always going to be a low-scoring affair, advantage very much with the defenders. Thus it proved, the teams tied at two points apiece at the break. Thurles were very quickly off the mark, a pointed free in the opening minute by corner-forward Conor Lanigan, but it was 14 minutes before we saw another score, the skilful Forde equalising for Nenagh with his first point of the game. The powerful Kennedy then hit a long-range point for Thurles but it was Jason Forde again replying for Nenagh, making it 0-2 each. As in the drawn game Thurles had plenty of possession but were having problems finding their range. A total of 16 wides they shot last week, seven more they had in that opening half here, wides that would ultimately prove costly. They also had a couple of goal opportunities, Nenagh keeper Will Power (what a great name for an athlete!) fumbling two balls, but on each occasion he recovered well, the chances lost. In the second half Thurles again began well, two points inside the opening three minutes, both by Lanigan, but Nenagh then reeled off three-in-a-row (Forde with two, sandwiched around an opportunist point by James Mackey) to take the lead for the first time in the game, 0-5 to 0-4, 40 minutes gone. That advantage didn't last very long, however. points from Lanigan, midfielder Pat Ralph and Clonoulty's Sean Maher had Thurles back in front by two points as the game headed into the final quarter, and they looking set for victory. Then came the game's decisive score. A high centre into the Thurles danger area by Jason Forde was won by Paudge Shanahan, leaving full-back John Ryan with little choice but to bring him down. Inside the area - penalty, said referee Paddy Russell, and Jason's well-struck bouncer gave the three-man wall no chance. 1-5 to 0-7. Again Thurles came back to tie, again Lanigan doing the honours, but two late points (Forde - inevitably - and Shanahan) saw Nenagh home. A rare win for them over Thurles CBS, and their reward? A semi-final date with the reigning champions, Limerick city powerhouse Árdscoil Rís - hold off on those celebrations! Forde steers Nenagh throughwww.independent.ie/Nenagh CBS 1-7 Thurles CBS 0-8Late points from Jason Forde and Padraig Shanahan edged Nenagh CBS past their Tipperary rivals at The Ragg yesterday. Many had felt that Nenagh had lost their chance having let a five-point lead slip in the drawn game last week, but this time they finished the stronger to set up a semi-final against Ardscoil Rís. Played in front of another big crowd despite the miserable conditions, both sides produced a gripping contest. The opening period, though, yielded just four points, two for each side, with Nenagh captain Forde getting the sole score from play in the half. Thurles made a brighter start to the second half with two Conor Lanigan points helping the seven-time champions to a two-point lead. However, Nenagh hit back with a point from James Mackey and two from the impressive Forde to go back in front in the 39th minute. The lead didn't last long, though, as a three-point salvo from Lanigan, Pat Ralph and Sean Maher in a four-minute spell put Thurles in control. Nenagh still trailed by two points with seven minutes remaining when they were awarded a penalty after Shanahan was pulled down by John Ryan. Forde used the greasy sod to his advantage as his low shot skidded off the stick of Thurles goalkeeper Jimmy Maher into the net. Thurles levelled in the 56th minute through a Lanigan free and the game appeared destined for extra-time. But Forde struck over a 55-yard free after substitute Sean Geaney was brought down, and Shanahan sealed victory in the third minute of added-time. DR.HARTY CUP SEMI FINAL: Sunday 5/02/2012 @ 2.30.p.m. Ard Scoil Rís Limerick v Nenagh CBS @ Tipperary Town (Source: AFR) Today's exciting H.C semi-final in Tipp Town ended in a draw, Nenagh CBS scoring 1-11, Ardscoil Rís 2-08. Level with two minutes to go, points from Jason Forde (free) and Tadhg Gallagher looked set to book the Brothers' place in their first Harty final since 1997 but two well-taken ASR scores earned the Limerick side a replay, which is fixed for the 14th of February @ 2:30pm in Sean Treacy Park, Tipp Town. Akin to their quarter final replay against Thurles, Nenagh can approach the upcoming match with confidence, secure in the knowledge that they are at least every bit as good as their opposition. The best of luck to Jack, Niall et al in this game.

Ardscoil Rís bar path as Nenagh bid to bridge 15-year Harty Cup final gap By Fintan O’Toole Tuesday, February 14, 2012 NENAGH CBS will bid to bridge a 15-year gap since their last appearance in the final of the Dr Harty Cup and thwart the ambitions of Ardscoil Rís when the teams renew acquaintances in today’s semi-final replay clash in Sean Treacy Park in Tipperary Town (2.30pm). The North Tipperary school have never managed to win this competition and came desperately close in last Sunday week’s drawn semi-final to securing a spot in the decider on February 26. Nenagh CBS led by two points entering injury-time yet Ardscoil Rís grabbed a draw courtesy of late points by Jack Kelleher and substitute Micheál O’Loughlin. The Limerick school have only four survivors from last year’s title-winning team in full-back PJ Hall, centre-back Barry O’Connell, midfielder Jamie Shanahan and corner-forward Kevin O’Brien. Yet their management team, led by Liam Cronin, have fashioned a strong new starting 15 with Jack Kelleher, Jody Hannon and Ronan Lynch all prominent. They will hope to avoid the slow start that marred their performance in the drawn game, conceding 1-2 without reply in the first six minutes. Nenagh CBS, managed by Limerick senior hurling trainer Donagh O’Donnell, were left disappointed by allowing victory slip from their grasp. They are enduring a marathon campaign after also requiring a replay in their quarter-final tie against Thurles CBS. Yet in both games against Thurles CBS and Ardscoil Rís they have displayed a tremendous work ethic against the two schools who have won the last three titles between them. Last year’s Tipperary minor hurling captain Jason Forde is their standout figure but Tadhg Gallagher, a younger brother of 2011 Tipperary U21 Joe, Jack Peters and Stephen O’Brien are all excellent prospects as well. If Nenagh CBS do not dwell on the setback of coughing up a late lead in the drawn game, they have the capacity to prevail. Verdict: Nenagh CBS. Source: www.limerickleader.ie/sport/gaelic-games/ardscoil_ris_lose_out_in_harty_cup_thriller_1_3521019ARDSCOIL Ris’ dream of claiming a hat-trick of Dr Harty Cup titles were shattered in the dramatic closing stages of their semi-final replay clash with Nenagh CBS at Tipperary Town on Wednesday afternoon as they went down on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-13. Three-in-a-row seeking Ardscoil looked a good bet to reach another Harty final when edging into a two-point lead with a little over five minutes remaining. However, Nenagh CBS’ outstanding performer, Jason Forde, helped the Tipperary side regain the lead with a splendid solo goal after he raced through the Ardscoil defence to score four minutes from time. Nenagh CBS now led by a point, but, to their credit, Ardscoil showed admirable resolve to respond and a pointed free from midfielder Jamie Shanahan as the game ticked into injury time, looked set to send the game to extra time. However, the drama wasn’t done yet and in a grandstand finish, Tipp minor star Forde ended Ardscoil Ris’ 18-game unbeaten run at Harty Cup level when he landed the winning point in the third minute of stoppage time. The final whistle brought heartache and bitter disappointment for an Ardscoil Ris side which had showed indomitable spirit to eek out the final two points in the drawn game and force the semi-final to a replay. Replays generally tend not to follow the same pattern as drawn games, but this semi-final tie was an exception to that old adage. The game was again highly competitive from the outset, with the sides going tit-for-that on the scoreboard and the outcome only decided deep in injury time. Ardscoil Ris will rue their inability to close the game out. Backed by a stiff breeze, their two-point advantage in a game where the sides had been level on four occasions to that point, should have proved the launch pad for another notable success in Munster Colleges’ premier hurling competition. The North Circular Road side were also left to regret some wayward shooting during both half, with the holders amassing up to a dozen wides over the hour. Ardscoil Ris’ defeat was their first suffered by the Limerick city side in Dr Harty Cup in three years. The school has built a reputation as a fine hurling nursery, but the challenge facing Ardscoil Ris will be one of maintaining those high standards in the years to come. This replay was a fine advertisement for the colleges’ game. The hurling, produced by both sides, was of a high quality with the continuity of the game helped by the remarkably dry underfoot conditions. The players’ first touch was assured and the ball-striking crisp. But teams had a real purpose about them and while the stakes were high, neither set of players allowed the occasion get the better of them. Nenagh CBS made good use of the elements in the opening half, racing into an early 0-3 to 0-0 lead. Their inspirational centre half-back, Jason Forde, who operated in a more advanced position as the game wore on scored all three points, two from play. Slowly Ardscoil Ris began to settle and by the 20th minute Nenagh’s advantage was reduced to two points, 0-5 to 0-3. The Lynch’s, Ronan with two frees, and Cian, from play, bagged the Limerick side’s points. With Ardscoil’s survivors from last year’s final, including captain PJ Hall, Barry O’Connell and Jamie Shanahan doing well, ably assisted by the likes of Ronan Lynch, the holders remained well in the contest. Within five minutes of half-time, Ardscoil were level, thanks to three fine points from Sixmilebridge’s Jamie Shanahan, including one smashing effort from play. Ardscoil did have to survive a few hairy moments in defence and netminder David Dempsey produced two terrific saves to deny Nenagh’s Jack Loughnane and Podge Shanahan scoring the game’s opening goal. The sides remained deadlocked, 0-7 each, at half-time. Little separated the sides during a highly competitive second half. The sides were tied three times during that period, but the game’s outstanding perfomer, Forde proved his side’s hero with that late winning point which helped Nenagh CBS reach their first final in 15 years. SCORERS - Nenagh CBS – Jason Forde 1-10 (0-4 frees), Stephen O’Brien 0-1; Ardscoil Ris – Ronan Lynch 0-5 (all frees), Jamie Shanahan 0-5 (four frees), Cian Lynch, William O’Donoghue and Jack Kelleher 0-1 each. NENAGH CBS – Will Power; Stephen Cleary, Kevin Gubbins, Donnacha Quinn; Eddie Hynes, Jason Forde, Jack Peters; Jack Loughnane, Jack Flaherty; Tadhg Gallagher, Conor Delaney, Stephen O’Brien; Podge Shanahan, Paudie Fogarty, James Mackey. Flying Forde inspires Nenagh
Nenagh CBS 1-11 Ardscoil Rís 0-13
By Fintan O’Toole (Examiner)
THE sparkling skills of Jason Forde inspired a dramatic victory for Nenagh CBS in yesterday’s Dr Harty Cup semi-final replay in Tipperary Town as the Silvermines youngster propelled his school into their first decider since 1997 with a late scoring salvo. Forde, captain of the Tipp minors last summer, has established himself as the talisman of this Nenagh CBS side and he delivered once more here with a staggering haul of 1-10.
It was his solitary goal and final point that transpired to be the crucial scores. In the 57th minute he wiped out the two-point lead that Ardscoil Rís possessed when taking a pass from Tadhg Gallagher before racing through the defence, shortening his grip to avoid a hook from Stephen Fitzgerald, and flicking the ball to the net.
Ardscoil Rís responded and levelled the game in the 61st minute when the nerveless Jamie Shanahan, under immense pressure near the sideline, fired over a long-rang free.
Yet Forde had the final say, collecting the ball in the middle third, scything through the Ardscoil Rís rearguard and lofting over a marvellous winning point. It was a heartbreaking defeat for Ardscoil Rís and was the first loss the school have suffered in this competition since their 2009 Dr Harty Cup semi-final loss to St Caimin’s (Shannon).
They came close to maintaining their three-in-a-row ambitions here with David Dempsey, PJ Hall, Ronan Lynch and Shanahan all making excellent contributions.
Nenagh CBS now face a novel final against Coláiste na Déise on Sunday week, with two schools who have never won this competition set to battle for honours. Forde has amassed 2-31 in his last four games, yet was keen to apportion the praise elsewhere.
"It’s a team effort. They’re all a great bunch of lads who have worked hard all year. The Harty wasn’t taken that seriously in the school for the last number of years. But Donagh O’Donnell and Niall Quigley have come in and done a tremendous job. I can’t thank them enough, if it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t be here.
"Jason led by example and is a great character," said Nenagh CBS manager Donagh O’Donnell afterwards. "For a fella who didn’t hit a ball from play last week, to come back and put up a score like that again was phenomenal."
Nenagh CBS had made the early running, assisted by the wind, to lead 0-3 to 0-0 after only six minutes. By the 20th minute they were still in the ascendancy by 0-5 to 0-3 yet Forde was their only scorer in the first-half and Ardscoil Rís gradually worked their way back into contention as they played intelligent hurling.
Shanahan, who started at full-forward, was withdrawn to midfield midway through the half where he was influential while Dempsey produced a splendid block to deny Jack Loughnane a goal in the 12th minute. Ardscoil Rís, who chalked up 12 wides in total, saw some shots from placed balls drift wide of the post but their accuracy improved to draw level at 0-7 apiece at the interval.
The reigning champions gained the initiative early in the second-half and held it for long stages. Ronan Lynch fired over a few points from frees while Barry O’Connell nullified Forde’s threat for a spell.
Nenagh CBS struggled to make headway up front, with a fine point by Stephen O’Brien their only score in the first 20 minutes of the second-half, but the superb defending of Jack Peters and Donncha Quinn helped keep Ardscoil Rís at bay.
The action became more frenetic nearing the finish as a pair of Forde frees tied the game at 0-10 apiece with eight minutes to go.
Impressive scores by William O’Donoghue and Jack Kelleher swung the pendulum back in the favour of Ardscoil Rís but it was Forde who came to the fore when his team’s need was greatest at the death.
Scorers for Nenagh CBS: J Forde 1-10 (0-6f), S O’Brien 0-1.
Scorers for Ardscoil Rís: R Lynch (0-5f), J Shanahan (0-4f) 0-5 each, W O’Donoghue, J Kelleher, C Lynch 0-1 each.

Earlier on today, Donagh Maher's GMIT defeated a DCU side that included Peter Gill on a scoreline of 1-24 to 0-12. Here's an interesting shot from the game: www.sportsfile.com/id/595462/ !! GMIT take early control and sound title warningGMIT 1-24 DCU 0-12 By John Harrington (Examiner) Thursday, February 16, 2012 In the first 15 minutes of this Fitzgibbon Cup clash at the DCU Sportsground yesterday, GMIT displayed the form that has many rating them dark-horses for glory this year. By then they’d scored 1-9 without reply, DCU unable to cope with the Connacht side’s pace, power and ruthlessness in front of goal. GMIT corner-forwards James Liddy and Niall Mannion did most of the early damage and were assisted out the field by Jimmy Gelston’s accuracy. DCU had the strong breeze, but it did little to help them make inroads against a physically powerful GMIT defence backboned by Galway’s Ger Mahon and Tipperary’s Donagh Maher. It looked like a total rout was on the cards when DCU defender Peter Gill was red-carded late in the first-half when his team trailed 1-12 to 0-4. But in adversity DCU found courage. Despite playing against the elements and with the numerical handicap, they played some gutsy and determined hurling in the second-half thanks to the example set by sub Tadgh ÓhUallachain, centre-back JJ Lennon and centre-forward Wes O’Brien. Their increased efforts were never going to amount to more than a damage limitation exercise though and GMIT’s diminishing returns had a lot to do with the fact they visibly took their foot off the gas. Their management may not be all that happy with that. but, judged on the quality they produced in the first 15 minutes, it’ll take a good side to beat them. In this week's Fitzgibbon Cup quarter final game, Donagh Maher's G.M.I.T unfortunately failed in their attempt to overcome L.I.T. However, no blame can be attached to Donagh, who kept no less an opponent than Joe Canning scoreless whilst he was upon him.
Niall McGrath and Stephen Murray will both be travelling to "the weekend" though after U.L and C.I.T recorded impressive victories in their respective matches. With these two colleges at separate sides of the semi final draw, here's hoping we have two representatives on final-day, which would ensure a 2012 Fitzgibbon Cup medal would return to the parish. In saying that, h'on U.L!!

Dr. Harty Cup Final – Nenagh CBS v Colaiste Na DeiseNenagh CBS will play Colaiste Na Deise in the Dr. Harty Cup Final on Sunday, February the 26th at 2:30pm in Leahy Park, Cashel (Source: Munster GAA). Surely this could have been fixed for a time and date that did not clash with Kilkenny v Tipperary in the opening round of the NHL?

Some wise words from our prophet, leader and lawgiver Moses:
Nenagh CBS chasing history in Harty Cup final (25/02/2012) By Shane Brophy
A great buzz of excitement has engulfed Nenagh CBS this week in anticipation of this Sunday’s Dr. Harty (Munster Colleges ‘A’ Hurling) Cup final.
Colaiste na nDéise (a combination of Dungarvan CBS and St Augustine’s College, Dungarvan) stand in the way of Nenagh CBS’ first ever Harty Cup success, having suffered defeats in the finals in 1990, 1996 and 1997.
The manner of Nenagh’s progress to the final which included replay victories in both the knockout rounds has captured the imagination of the school, town and the surrounding parishes with nine clubs represented on the 28-man panel.
“It adds a huge buzz to the school,” said Tony Slattery, Principal of Nenagh CBS.
“There is great life in the place and it’s not just the panel of players, we’ve had terrific support from the other students and it has gone right through from the 6th years down to the 1st years.”
“There is a great atmosphere around the school, there are loads of photos and banners up around the place, there is an air of enjoyment and excitement about the whole campaign and it has given a great lift to the school.”
While the school are keen not to overhype the build-up to the game for the sake of the players, Mr Slattery did admit that a number of events will take place to mark competing in what is the biggest game in Munster secondary schools hurling.
“You need to realise how special this competition is and to be in the final of it,” reflected Mr Slattery who played Harty Cup hurling for Cashel Community School.
“It needs to be marked in the appropriate fashion and to generate the interest among the students and go forward with the sense of enjoyment and anticipation and the school, the townspeople and the locality behind the team.
“We are anticipating great support, not only from the school but from the town of Nenagh and the surrounding clubs that have always been so good to the school”, he said.
There was plenty of disappointment locally when it was confirmed that the Munster Colleges Council were sticking with their scheduled Sunday final, despite it clashing with the Allianz National Hurling League game between Kilkenny and Tipperary at Nowlan Park.
However, Tony Slattery is urging those mulling over what game to attend to choose to possibly see Nenagh CBS create history.
“You have a chance of recording the Tipp/Kilkenny match whereas this is a special occasion for us and I think maybe Tipperary and Kilkenny might meet again later in the championship. This is the final of a major competition and it would be great to get a lot of support but also from Nenagh and the surrounding clubs that feed into the school. We would anticipate and expect a big crowd in Cashel for the final,” he said.
Nenagh CBS have done it the hard way to get to this stage, requiring replays in both the quarter and semi-finals in defeating the schools that had won the last three Dr. Harty Cups between them, Thurles CBS and Ardscoil Rís. Tony Slattery admitted the Thurles victory gave the team a massive boost in confidence that they could go all the way.
“There was a quite confidence the whole time within this panel of players and indeed with Donagh (O’Donnell) and Niall (Quigley) who are over them that we had a really good bunch of players that were quite focused and dedicated at making the best effort that they could in the competition and yet we knew there were very good teams in it.
“We got through the group stage by topping the group and into the knockout stages but Thurles was a huge hurdle because they have been there or thereabouts for the last four or five years, contested a number of finals and were unlucky not to have won than the one Harty Cup than they have in the last few years.
“We knew they were formidable hurdle for us but there was a steely determination about these lads that they were not going to be defeated easily and had a self confidence that they could match what was out there and they have shown that in the last two games.
“It just proves to themselves that they had this ability to see it come to fruition, that they have gotten over two of the form teams in the competition for the last number of years. It cements the belief that they have in themselves that they are competing at the right level and are able for it,” he said.

Shane McCarthy also played a part in the Tech's 2-8 to 0-13 victory over Borrisokane CC in the Munster Vocational Schools Senior "A" Hurling Semi-Final during the week. The best of luck to all concerned in their upcoming final and what an achievement it would be for the region if the Brothers, the Tech and the Convent were all to hold the Munster 'A' cups in a fortnight's time.

Dr. Harty Cup Final – Colaiste Na Deise 2-14 Nenagh CBS 1-10
Déise savour ‘unbelievable’ victory
By Fintan O’Toole for the Irish Examiner newspaper
For only the fourth time in the history of the competition, the Dr Harty Cup resides in Waterford after Dungarvan combination Coláiste na nDéise swept to glory in sparkling fashion at Cashel. Coláiste na nDéise followed in the footsteps of the 1953 winning Mount Sion side and the De La Salle outfit that claimed back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008, as they produced a dynamic and skilful display that broke the resistance of a brave Nenagh CBS challenge.
There was a great sense of expectation before this final began as both sides were pursuit of their first title and the novelty of the pairing attracted a huge crowd to Leahy Park. However a blistering opening half performance by Coláiste na nDéise settled the encounter as they enjoyed a 2-5 to 0-1 advantage after the opening quarter and by the interval were still in control as they led 2-10 to 0-5.
Nenagh CBS battled brilliantly to the final whistle, with Jack Peters and Jack Loughnane leading the way, but they could never make serious inroads into the Coláiste na nDéise advantage. The final whistle sparked huge scenes of celebration as the amalgamation, who lost their opening game to Midleton CBS, savoured a remarkable triumph. “Kerry Colleges beat us two years ago and we were at the lowest ebb we could be,” revealed manager Darragh Duggan afterwards. “They came from nowhere, it’s unbelievable. The boys have come back and you saw today how much they wanted it. Fellas asked did we want it more than Nenagh and I think we answered everyone today, with no little hurling as well. “That can’t be overlooked. The boys have unbelievable skill. Looking at the Dungarvan lads after the Doon defeat last week was heartbreaking, they had it and they were sucker-punched. They learned from it and today weren’t going to be beaten.”
Nenagh coach CBS Donagh O’Donnell showed the polar opposite emotion: “We’re gutted. We thought we had everything right – kept to our routine and we just didn’t really show up. Maybe nerves got to us and we leaked two goals in the first ten minutes. “After that it was going to be uphill. I’m very proud of the players, they’re such a good group. They work very hard and even despite the way the first half went, they kept plugging away in the second half.”
Coláiste na nDéise had an array of outstanding individual performers with the Curran brothers, Cathal and Patrick, posing problems for the Nenagh CBS rearguard all afternoon as they struck 2-11 between them. Kieran Power and Michéal Harney also had important roles to play in attack while Colin Dunford and Cormac Curran, a grandson of Austin Flynn the full-back on the 1959 Waterford All-Ireland senior winning team, excelled at midfield. In defence Clashmore’s Tadgh Burke was hugely impressive while goalkeeper Eoin Kearns made a superb early save to deny Stephen O’Brien a potentially vital goal for Nenagh CBS.
Coláiste na nDéise were clinical from the off in attack while they displayed a sharpness all over the pitch that prevented Nenagh CBS from replicating the heroics of recent wins over Thurles CBS and Ardscoil Rís. Patrick Curran smashed home their first goal in the ninth minute after a great team move involving Power, Harney and Cormac Curran. Then in the 12th minute, Cathal Curran blasted a 20-yard free to the roof of the net and Coláiste na nDéise were in a commanding nine-point lead. Nenagh fought manfully to get back in contention, with Tadhg Gallagher hitting a couple of fine points, but Cathal and Cormac Curran raised four white flags at the end of the half, to reinforce Coláiste na nDéise’s superiority. The Dungarvan combination maintained their focus after the interval with a defence led by Tom Tobin, Tom Devine and Burke in exemplary form and at one juncture enjoyed a 2-13 to 0-6 advantage. Nenagh CBS mounted a revival in the closing quarter with Jason Forde, who was well-marshalled by the Coláiste na nDéise defence, grabbing a late consolation goal. Both sides were reduced to 14 men in the closing stages with Podge Shanahan (Nenagh CBS) and Evan Collins (Coláiste na Déise) dismissed in separate incidents.
Scorers for Coláiste na nDéise: Cathal Curran 1-9 (1-6fs), P Curran 1-2, Cormac Curran 0-2 (0-1f), C Dunford 0-1.
