Forde helps Nenagh forget heartache
Nenagh CBS 0-17 St Kieran's 0-14
Monday, March the 19th, 2012
NENAGH CBS bounced back from their Harty Cup final heartbreak to send holders St Kieran's crashing out at the Ragg.
Former Tipperary minor star Jason Forde rattled over 14 points, including 12 frees, as the Tipperary outfit produced the perfect response following their defeat to Colaiste na nDeise in the Munster decider.
Nenagh coach Donagh O'Donnell reflected: "We sat down after the Harty and talked about it. We talked about how we never performed that day and with the courage and the commitment that they have, they shouldn't let this opportunity slip. They refocused, got themselves back on the horse and they're now in an All-Ireland final."
St Kieran's, who were level at 0-7 apiece at half-time, lost centre-back Emmet Byrne to a controversial straight red card with four minutes remaining.
Prior to Byrne's sending-off, Nenagh led by just a point, 0-13 to 0-12, but found an extra gear in the closing minutes as Paudie Fogarty came off the bench to score two points from play.
Forde was his side's sole scorer in the first half with seven frees. It was a half that produced just two points from play, scored by St Kieran's pair Michael Donnelly and Ciaran Prendergast, but the quality of hurling was good as Nenagh brought a ferocious intensity to proceedings.
Forde was the talisman, but there were superb performances all over the field from Nenagh, with Eddie Hynes, Jack Loughnane, Stephen O'Brien and Killian Gleeson particularly good.
Scorers: Nenagh CBS: J Forde 0-14 (12f), P Fogarty 0-2, K Gleeson 0-1.
St Kieran's: A Cleere 0-8f, M Donnelly 0-4 (2f), C Prendergast, J Maher 0-1 each.
NENAGH CBS -- W Power; D Quinn, K Gubbins, S Cleary; E Hynes, J Flaherty, D Peters; S Geaney, J Loughnane; S O'Brien, J Mackey, K Gleeson; T Gallagher, J Forde, C Delaney. Sub: P Fogarty for Delaney (42).
ST KIERAN'S -- N Kehoe; R O'Hanrahan, R Lennon, D Hennessy; E Morrissey, E Byrne, C Wafer; M Donnelly, J McGrath; D Cody, P Kenneally, A Cleere; C Bolger, T O'Hanrahan, C Prendergast. Subs: D Burke for Bolger (49), J Maher for Hennessy (49).
Ref -- A Stapleton (Laois).

"Nenagh CBS take on Kilkenny CBS in the All-Ireland Colleges final on Saturday in Thurles at 3.15pm. Please support the lads if you can at all!" (Source: @backpagebrian i.e. Tipperary Star GAA journalist Brian McDonnell on Twitter).
As you may have seen in the national media, the Tech's semi-final was abandoned for the second week in a row. As I write this post, I believe a re-fixture has yet to be made.

A couple of weeks back, Mary I completed a league and cup double when they won the Higher Education Division 2 championship. In the final, which was played in Belfield, they overcame U.U.J on a scoreline of 3-18 to 1-8. Eoin Hogan (Gortmore) was an important member of their team - well done Leahy!

Kilkenny CBS will be disappointed that they failed to build on their strong start with Philly Campion opening the scoring, followed by a fourth minute Shane Cuddihy goal after Nenagh goalkeeper Will Power misjudged a high ball which dropped into the net. James Mackey got Nenagh off the mark a minute later but for the opening quarter Kilkenny CBS dominated. The Leinster side stretched their lead with two points from Morgan Clifford before Nenagh went on a storming finish to the half which yielded 2-3 in a five-minute spell. Firstly Jason Forde played in Paudie Fogarty in the 26th minute and two minutes later Forde scored another. Further points from Forde and Stephen O’Brien helped Nenagh into a three-point lead at the break, however Kilkenny started the second half the better with points from Kevin Kenny and Morgan Clifford. The crucial third goal for Nenagh came in the 37th minute when Forde latched onto a pass from Tadhg Gallagher and pulled first time to the corner of the net. Stephen O’Brien and two points each from James Mackey and Killian Gleeson put Nenagh firmly in control, leading by six points at the three quarter mark. Kilkenny CBS produced a strong finish with Robbie Buckley causing problems while surging attacks ending with frees of which Owen McGrath converted three, and when wing back Niall Mullins got on the end of a sideline ball to crash home a goal in the final minute, Kilkenny had hope. Irish Independent Report:
Star man Forde hails Nenagh determination
Monday April 02 2012
Nenagh CBS 3-10 Kilkenny CBS 2-11
NENAGH CBS became the third Tipperary school to win this title following a hard-fought victory in Thurles on Saturday.
The victory completed a remarkable year for the north Tipperary school, who wouldn't have been many people's tip for the Munster title, let alone the All-Ireland.
"We couldn't have dreamed of this at the start of the year," said captain Jason Forde.
"Looking at our record over the last few years, nobody could have forecast that we would be here doing it, but sheer guts and determination got us here."
Despite not being 100pc having suffered from the flu in the build-up to the game, Forde was once again Nenagh's key man, scoring 2-2 and setting up his side's third goal for Silvermines clubmate Paudie Fogarty, which began the Nenagh charge after a slow start.
Joint-manager Donach O'Donnell said the victory was just reward for the manner in which the team developed throughout the campaign.
"Those guys did it the hard way. They defeated Thurles CBS, Ardscoil Ris, St Kieran's (Kilkenny), who were going for three in a row, and if they didn't win today, it wouldn't have been right.
"They deserve it -- they are a great bunch."
Kilkenny CBS will be disappointed that they failed to build on their strong start, with Philly Campion opening the scoring, followed by a fourth-minute Shane Cuddihy goal.
They stretched their lead with two points from full-forward Morgan Clifford before Nenagh went on a storming finish to the half which yielded 2-3 in a five-minute spell. Firstly, Forde played in Fogarty in the 26th minute and two minutes later Forde latched onto a long ball before coolly slotting past Darragh Houlihan.
Further points from Forde and Stephen O'Brien helped Nenagh into a three-point lead at the break. However, Kilkenny started the second half the better side, with points from Kevin Kenny and the excellent Clifford cutting the margin.
The crucial third goal for Nenagh came in the 37th minute when Forde latched onto a long ball and pulled first time to the corner of the net. O'Brien and two points each from James Mackey and Killian Gleeson kept Nenagh in control.
Kilkenny CBS produced a strong finish but time ran out as Nenagh hung on to deservedly lift the Croke Cup.
SCORERS -- Nenagh: J Forde 2-2 (2f), J Mackey 0-3, P Fogarty 1-0, S O'Brien, K Gleeson 0-2 each, S Geaney 0-1. Kilkenny: M Clifford 0-4, O McGrath 0-3f, S Cuddihy, N Mullins 1-0 each, P Campion, E Fennelly, K Kenny, R Buckley 0-1 each.
NENAGH CBS -- W Power; S Cleary, K Gubbins, D Quinn; E Hynes, J Peters, J Flaherty; J Loughnane, S Geaney; T Gallagher, S O'Brien, K Gleeson; P Fogarty, J Forde, J Mackey. Subs: D Peters for Quinn (52), C Delaney for Gubbins (59).
KILKENNY CBS -- D Houlihan; S Cassin, E Cody, C McGrath; N Mullins, O McGrath, R Fitzpatrick; D Sheehan, J Langton; C Doyle, S Cuddihy, P Campion; K Kenny, M Clifford, E Fennelly. Subs: L Scanlon for Campion (40), D Bolger for Sheehan (46), R Buckley for Cuddihy (46), P Delahunty for Fennelly (58).

www.nenagh.ie/news/article/nenagh-cbs-knocked-out-of-dr-harty-cup Nenagh CBS, the defending All-Ireland colleges champions, were knocked out of this year’s Dr Harty Cup following a one-point defeat (1-11 to 0-15) suffered at the hands of Midleton CBS in Charleville today. For prolonged periods of this encounter Nenagh CBS looked the more accomplished outfit, but they failed to put away a resilient Midleton CBS team. After just ten minutes Nenagh CBS led 1-1 to 0-1, but Midleton reeled Nenagh CBS in and trailed by just a point at the break (1-5 to 0-7). Midleton then forced themselves into a deserved 0-13 to 1-7 lead by the 54th minute, but Nenagh CBS responded with four consecutive points to take the lead (1-11 to 0-13) in the 61st minute. Midleton, however, were far from finished and hit two late, late points to book their place in the quarter-finals. Donnacha Quinn raced on to a booming Jack Peters clearance in the tenth minute before firing home a left-handed shot which helped Nenagh CBS into a 1-1 to 0-1 lead. While Midleton managed to respond three Tadhg Gallagher points from play established a 1-4 to 0-3 lead inside the opening twenty minutes. Midleton then converted three successive frees to cut the deficit to a single point before a Donnacha Quinn free steadied Nenagh CBS prior to the break. Yet another Midleton free left just a single point (1-5 to 0-7) between them at the interval. Midleton began the second half in positive fashion with two frees helping the Cork men into a 0-9 to 1-5 lead before Tadhg Gallagher responded for Nenagh CBS in the 38th minute. Midleton then scooted into a two-point lead before the game reached a critical juncture in the 47th minute when Andy Dunne created a goal-scoring opportunity for James Mackey. Unfortunately, Mackey’s shot was deflected out for a ’65 which Donnacha Quinn converted. Following two further frees (the Rebels ninth from a placed opportunity) Midleton CBS led 0-13 to 1-7 by the 54th minute. Finally, Nenagh CBS sparked into hurling life with three points in two minutes (two from Donnacha Quinn and one from Killian Gleeson) levelled matters by the 58th minute - 1-10 to 0-13. All the momentum was with Nenagh CBS and Andy Dunne franked that dominance in the first minute of injury time when the Burgess man fired Nenagh CBS into a 1-11 to 0-13 lead. To their credit Midleton CBS hit back with two points of their own and celebrated wildly when referee Michael Meade blew his final whistle. Nenagh CBS’ search a first-ever Dr Harty Cup title goes on. Nenagh CBS: Mark Grace (Toomevara), Conor Ryan (Nenagh Éire Óg), Niall Gleeson (Portroe), David Sweeney (Kildangan), Andrew Coffey (Nenagh Éire Óg), Jack Peters (Kilruane MacDonagh’s), Darragh Peters (Kilruane MacDonagh’s), Killian Gleeson (Nenagh Éire Óg, 0-1), Jack Keating (Portroe), Stephen O’Brien (Ballina), Tadhg Gallagher (Kildangan, 0-4), Shane Hennessy (Nenagh Éire Óg), Andy Dunne (Burgess, 0-1), Donnacha Quinn (Nenagh Éire Óg, 1-5, 0-3 frees, 0-1 ‘65), James Mackey (Nenagh Éire Óg). Subs: (HT) Stephen Cleary (Kilruane MacDonagh’s) for Jack Keating, (57th) Bill O’Flaherty (Burgess) for Conor Ryan. Referee: Michael Meade (Limerick).
